If your child is having some challenges at school, and you find that you are unable to come up with a plan on your own, or you’ve spoken to your child’s teacher and you really can’t find that right fit to make the school day go as well as it should, there may be some legal remedies available to you. We can help you explore them. When a parent’s challenges or a child’s struggles are being dismissed or not getting the attention they deserve, we enjoy being able to advocate for them and to help the child enjoy going to school. We hate hearing that a child is miserable or depressed because of what is going on at school. It shouldn’t be that way. We can help to fix that. If you have tried some self-help and feel that you are not getting anywhere, then please contact us. We may be able to provide a different direction or point you in the right direction.

Specifically, we offer the following services:

IEP/504 Plan review and development

We analyze a child’s IEP or 504 Plan to determine if it adequately addresses their needs, and advocate for necessary changes.

Attend IEP/504 Plan meetings

We represent parents at IEP and 504 Plan meetings to ensure their child’s needs are properly addressed, and appropriate services are provided.

Due process hearings

We file due process complaints, and represent clients in due process hearings when disputes arise with a child’s school district regarding the child’s IEP or 504 Plan.

Independent educational evaluations

We assist in obtaining independent evaluations to assess a child’s needs, when necessary.

Negotiate with school districts

We negotiate with school districts, and mediate, when appropriate, to reach agreements on appropriate accommodations and services for a child.

Legal advice and consultation

We provide guidance on special education laws and rights, and advise parents on strategies to empower them to advocate for their child.

Placement disputes

We assist in advocating for appropriate school placements, including private placements, when necessary.

Assistive technology access

We help to ensure a child receives necessary assistive technology devices and training.

Appeals process

We represent clients in appeals to state agencies, if necessary.

Our Hours of Operation

My Child’s Advocate supports families in Broward County during its normal business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, the firm recognizes that some working parents may not be able to meet or talk during those hours. As such, upon request, meetings and calls can take place after normal business hours or on weekends.
